Introduction

The Hungarian Puli is a distinctive breed because of its eye-catching dreadlock-style coat of corded hair. Bred as herding dogs in Hungary, this thick coat helped keep them warm in even the harshest of winters, but today, it adds to their appeal and charm as friendly, trustworthy bundles of fun, making them much sought-after family pets and companions.

History

The exact origin of the Hungarian Puli is unknown, but it’s believed their ancestry may date back to the 9th century and the dogs of the Magyar tribes. It was used as a herding dog, also helping shepherds protect their flocks from wolf attacks. They were known as “Hungarian Legends” because of their abilities, and were so highly-prized by shepherds that an entire year’s s wages might be paid to own one. Kept a closely guarded secret for years, the Hungarian Puli is now gaining recognition and popularity as a family pet around the world.

Personality

The Hungarian Puli is a kind-natured, fun-loving, and sometimes mischievous little dog. They are loyal and loving companions, tending to bond closely with just one person in a family environment, but always friendly around their people. They’re not known to be aggressive, but they may growl at strangers and could be snappy if mishandled by young children. However, with the correct introductions, they’ll happily accept newcomers into their “flock” – even tolerating the family cat if they must.
