Introduction

Flat-Coated Retrievers are one of those pups that very much sit in the same lineage as the Golden or Labrador Retrievers, which of course are both breeds that people absolutely adore. The way to tell the difference is that Flat-Coated Retrievers have longer muzzles than the other two, which is their main identifying factor.

Known for their high energy levels, their excitable nature, and their fun-loving attitude where they adore nothing more than running around, playing games, and wanting to spend time with their owners, Flat-Coated Retrievers make for fantastic additions to your happy family.

History

Records show that Flat-Coated Retrievers first hit the scene around 200 years ago when Newfoundland and St John Waterdogs were bred together, which is why Flat-Coated Retrievers are known for their affinity with water! It’s suggested that the breed started in Canada, but soon were exported to the UK and then crossed with Border Collies for their working dog traits, which lead to the dogs we know and love today.

As with most dogs, the numbers dropped around the time of both World Wars and with the changing of how things were done, like farming and so on, but there are still dedicated breeders around the world that keep the numbers up.

Personality

Easily the best words to describe a Flat-Coated Retriever are ‘goofy’, and ‘bouncy’, so if you take the time to imagine a dog like that, you’re pretty much imagining exactly what a Flat-Coated Retriever is like. As with most Retriever breeds, you need to make sure you’re training your dog assertively and firmly to get the best results, but you can’t be harsh or mean. Remain gentle and this will be a fun-loving dog you won’t be able to get enough of!
