Introduction

Cocker Spaniels are one of the most traditional English dogs out there. Originally bred as working gun dogs, they have been a part of British culture for centuries and currently (as of April 2021) rank as the number five most popular dog breed in the country.

Easy to look after, lots of fun to be around, and bursting with personality, there’s no denying that Cocker Spaniels are amazing dogs, so much so that you can’t really go wrong!

History

In the UK, Cocker Spaniels have always been known as gun dogs and were bred to help flush out game and hunt birds from bushes, as well as collecting them once they had been shot. There are reports that date this kind of usage back as far as the 1700s!

However, it wasn’t until 1902 that the Cocker Spaniel Club was founded, and the dogs really started to be kept as companion dogs. They were then exported to the US where the American Cocker Spaniel started to appear, which nowadays are very different dogs to the UK version, so make sure you’re aware which is which!

Personality

Due to the Cocker Spaniel’s working nature, these are very active dogs that love running around, love exploring and putting their noses in things, and love having a task to complete. Cocker Spaniels are always happiest when they’re getting involved in something fun, which means frequently playing games and stimulating activities!

Because they’re eager to please and very gentle to those they love, Cocker Spaniels are fine to have around children and other pets you may have, and as long as you’re socialising them from a young age, they’ll be fine around strangers and other dogs.
