The Beagle is constantly considered one of the world’s favourite pet dogs due to its cheerful personality and lack of inherited health issues. Being part of a pack is in their blood, so Beagles are at their happiest around other dogs or humans. If you live alone, or aren’t able to give it plenty of attention daily, then this breed isn’t suited to you.

The modern-day Beagle arrived in the 1830s and is a combination of the Harrier, the Southern Hound, the Talbot Hound and the North Country Beagle. It soon became a staple amongst British gentlemen because of its ability to sniff out rabbits and hare. They faced near extinction in the late 19th century, with just 18 packs in existence! They are far from dying out now; in 2020, the Beagle was ranked the 7th most popular dog in America; 18th in the United Kingdom.

Fun Fact: During the Tudor era, beagles were available in pocket size! Queen Elizabeth I called them ‘singing beagles’ and would often allow them to run free during dinner parties to entertain guests. Sadly these pooches no longer exist.

Beagles are excitable and aren’t afraid to make their voice heard. Whilst you can make efforts to train your pooch to be quieter, it's in their nature to bark when they sniff something interesting, even if it is in the early hours of the morning! One of their best features is that they really do make friends with everybody they meet. They love having company, and will become increasingly anxious if left alone for too long.
