Introduction

Commonly mistaken for sharing the same ancestors as the Labradoodle, the Australian Labradoodle is a combination of six breeds. It has adorable teddy bear features complete with huge puppy dog eyes. It’s easy to see why these pooches are always in such high demand!

If you are considering welcoming this breed into your home, it is important to quiz your breeder on their methods. Puppy mills make Labradoodles on a cheap budget which can result in health complications later down the line.

History

In 1989 Willy Conran, who worked for the Australian guide dog services, had a problem to solve. His client needed a guide dog but was allergic to dogs. Conran combined the Labrador and the Poodle. The poodle’s coat isn’t 100% hypoallergenic, but it is ideal for allergy sufferers as the curls ‘catch’ loose hairs and skin. A whopping 29 out of a possible 31 puppies went on to become guide dogs in this batch!

It didn’t take much time for this breed to become an in-demand household pet. The Labradoodle developed further with four other breeds* to create the Australian Labradoodle. Its low shedding coat and even temperament are hard to resist. Whilst a breed standard was introduced in 1997, the Australian Labradoodle is still considered a crossbreed, not a breed in its own right.

Personality

This puppy is the perfect choice for any dog-owning novice. Playful, happy and gentle, the Australian Labradoodle is universally loveable. They take well to training and pick up commands fast. You should be sure to begin their socialization training early, as they can turn cheeky and make attempts to outsmart their master! It is no wonder why they make successful guide dogs; they are gentle and loyal and will be by your side for life.
