Introduction

The American Leopard Hound is a difficult breed to come across, especially outside of the USA. This pooch shouldn’t be overlooked because of its rarity though, as it is a perfect all-rounder. It has a muscular build and high endurance, which makes it a suitable working dog. Their desire to please also make them very loveable, meaning that the breed transitions from worker to family pet in an instant.

History

The history of the American Leopard Hound is unclear. Whilst it was officially recognised in 1998 by the UKC, its origins are believed to date back much further. When the Spanish conquistadors travelled to Mexico in the 16th century, they brought dogs with them. The Leopard Hound is believed to have been bred by these dogs and dogs native to Mexico.

In North Carolina, they were bred as tree hunting dogs. They make the ideal hunter because they are really easy to train and are considered great all-rounders. Combine this with a temperament to please their master and you get the perfect hunting dog! So don’t be surprised when your pooch takes off after a squirrel in the park, it's in their blood after all.

Personality

American Leopard hounds are energetic and protective characters. They make the perfect student as they have a naturally high intellect and aren’t stubborn. For first time dog owners, this makes them an ideal choice as the training isn’t too difficult. They may not be the cuddliest of dogs, but they still show lots of affection, and as a result of this they make strong bonds with their owner.

Fun fact: These loveable pups are particularly fond of children and will go to great lengths to protect a child they are familiar with.
