Highly energetic and full of life, the Airedale Terrier is dubbed the ‘King of the Terriers’ due to it being the largest of the Terrier family. Originally bred in Airedale, a valley in West Yorkshire, these dogs made successful working farm dogs, and are used today as guide and police dogs. Of course, the Airedale is a highly adored pet too! Just ask presidents’ Woodrow Wilson, Theodore Roosevelt and Warren Harding! (These three presidents all owned an Airedale Terrier).

Originating in the mid-19th century, Airedale Terriers were bred from Otterhounds to make the ideal working farm dog. It was officially recognised as a breed in 1886, and quickly became a popular sporting dog for the ‘common working-class.’

Their contribution to History intensified in World War One. They acted as messengers behind trenches; transporting important information and mail to different sections. In addition to this, they found wounded soldiers in need of urgent medical care.

It’s easy to see why this dog is a firm favourite of many working men - their intelligence and independence makes them the perfect all-rounder.

It’s easy to understand why these energetic pups are ideal workers companions. Energetic, alert and reliable, they are eager to please and always have stacks of energy. Airedales’ are often seen in obedience and agility trials because of their smart nature. They will undoubtedly bring life to any household, and new owners should ensure that they have the patience to deal with their sometimes yappy nature!
