Introduction

The Trailhound is similar in appearance to an English Foxhound, but generally slightly lighter and leaner as they were bred specifically for speed and stamina. They are scent hounds, and their sport is “racing” round a manmade trail over a distance of 10 miles, leaping ditches, hedges, and any other obstacles along the way with spectators placing wagers on which hound will complete the trail in the fastest time.

History

Trailhounds were originally a cross between Foxhounds and other breeds including Harriers, Pointers, and sheepdogs. The sport of hound trailing dates back to the 1800s in England’s Lake District and it remains a uniquely British sport. A rag soaked in paraffin and aniseed creates the trail and the circular routes test the hounds scenting skills and fitness with natural and manmade obstacles of every description forming a variety of challenges along the way.

Personality

Trailhounds are big, athletic dogs, but they are highly adaptable and will readily adjust to indoor living and family life. They have friendly, affectionate temperaments, and generally get on well with other pets and children, and while they benefit from plenty of exercise, they will happily settle for the rest of the day in a comfy, cosy spot. They are loyal and fun to have around, and some retired racing dogs go on to be very successful as PAT (therapy) dogs.

Care Tips the Trailhound is a low maintenance breed, but plenty of exercise is needed. Grooming: an occasional brush-over is generally enough to keep a Trailhound’s weather-resistant coat in good condition, but hounds do like to roll in smelly things! Feeding: two meals per day of high-quality food. Exercise: at least one or two hours of exercise is needed each day, ideally with as much off the lead time as possible if in a safe environment. A Trailhound makes a great exercise companion for active individuals that like to go on longer hikes, and they will then curl up happily at your feet for the rest of the day.
