Introduction

The Sproodle is a cross between a Springer Spaniel and a Poodle, a combination designed to provide the benefits of the Poodle’s low-shedding coat along with the energy and intelligence of the English Springer Spaniel. The resulting affectionate bundle of fun is a winning combination, making Sproodles popular family pets.

History

The Sproodle was first introduced in the 1980s or 90s, and like other “designer dogs” and popular hybrids, the exact origins are unknown. Combinations of breeds already existed in mongrel mixes, but the first intentional mix was most likely in North America. The English Springer Spaniel has origins dating back to at least the 14th century and the Poodle’s origins go all the way back to German ancestors in the 15th century.

Personality

The combination of the Spring Spaniel’s friendly, outgoing personality and the Poodle’s intelligence and energy creates a super-sociable bundle of fun that makes the Sproodle an increasingly popular family pet and companion. Both parents are working breeds, and this is seen in the Sproodle’s need for exercise and entertainment, but in a suitably busy and active home environment, they are sweet-natured dogs that offer, fun, friendship, and undying loyalty.

Care Tips Sproodles can be relatively high-maintenance, depending on the type of coat they inherit, and they need plenty of exercise. Grooming: most Sproodle coats will need professional grooming several times each year, with twice-weekly brushing in-between. Feeding: two meals per day of high-quality food. Exercise: one hour daily is the minimum, split into two walks, but ideally with additional free time off the lead in a secure garden to let off steam. This intelligent breed thrives on human interaction and needs play and mental stimulation to stay happy and settled.
