Introduction

Originally a gun dog the Springer Spaniel is a people orientated dog that does well running in the field or family home. An old English breed the Springer Spaniel boasts an old heritage with popularity both in the nobility and the common English man. Although not currently very popular, those who own this breed know how enthusiastic and hardworking they can be and how wonderful of a companion they are.

History

Spaniels were originally bred as gun dogs used to flush prey out of dense brush to make it easier for their owners and hunters to shoot them and retrieve. From there English Springer Spaniels started to be bred as a larger variation of the breed. This breed were popular as far back as the 1500s as hunting companions both for British nobility and the common man. In the 1800s the Duke of Norfolk became interested in the breed and he started a line that he called the Norfolk Spaniel which is now known as the English Springer Spaniel. With many notable wins in competitions and a good temperament the popularity of this breed is once again set to grow.

Personality

Cheerful, alert, and intelligent, this breed makes a good yet energetic family dog. Whilst they get along with children of all ages they need to be supervised at all times to make sure both children and furry friends behave. As an intelligent breed they can be taught a significant amount of tricks and do especially well with retrieving games. To make sure they remain happy and confident around other animals and unknown people it is of great importance that they are socialised to a lot of different people and experiences.
