Introduction

An easy going terrier the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier is an affectionate and sturdy family dog. Good for families and first time owners. An Irish breed with a fantastic temperament, these working dogs can fit into any home and make wonderful companions, whatever your age.

History

The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier was thought to have been originally bred to be a Farm dog in Ireland. The breed was considered the “poor man's wolfhound.” as it was not kept by any of the nobility. They shared family trees with the Irish Wolfhound, and the Kerry Blue Terrier, but the Irish Wolfhound was used by nobility, and the Kerry Blue Terrier was developed in response to nobility laws. Sadly Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier tails were often docked to avoid taxes and they were often kept to specific sizes. Eventually they were taken to the United States in 1940. It was recognised by the Irish Kennel Club in 1937 and the American Kennel Club started to accept the breed into regular classes in 1973.

Personality

Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers are wonderful family dogs that are good with all children of all ages and are sturdy enough to withstand young children's handling. However, as with all dogs, children must be taught how to safely and responsibly interact with dogs and they should be supervised at all times they are playing with their furry friends. They have a good level of intelligence and so they are able to learn a good amount of commands. They can be willful and occasionally challenging to work with, however on the whole they are wanting to please their owners. Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers are affectionate, playful, and energetic making them both fantastic working dogs and family dogs. To keep them happy and confident puppies should be socialised to as many new people and experiences from an early age.
