Originally a much larger breed, the modern Pomeranian is a fraction of the size of his ancestors. Always a breed with a certain cachet, the Pomeranian has had many famous owners over the centuries including Mozart and Michelangelo. One of Queen Victoria’s favourite breeds, royal patronage was no disadvantage to this cute white ball of fluff. Two of the three dogs which survived the sinking of the Titanic were Pomeranians. Still beloved of dog owners in the 21st century, the Pomeranian is often the breed with the highest number of entries at the world-famous dog show, Crufts.

Descended from the Spitz of Northern Europe, the modern Pomeranian is a toy breed but clearly, was once much larger. Dogs from the Arctic region are prominent in the Pomerian’s evolution including the American Eskimo Dog, the Samoyed and the Norwegian Elkhound. The modern breed still has many Spitz features including a wedge-shaped head, thick coat and pricked ears.

Named after Pomerania which is an area on the border between Poland and Germany, this breed was popular throughout the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries but mainly with the nobility and royals. It was Queen Victoria’s patronage of a small red sable Pomeranian that led breeders to emulate her and start to develop a much smaller and lighter dog. It is said that the breed halved in size throughout her reign but that was 64 years! More colours were imported from Europe around this time.

The breed club began in 1891 in the UK and 1898 in the States and the breed is regularly amongst the most popular entries every year at Crufts.

The Pomeranian is often described as a big dog in a small body, a ‘can-do’ dog rather than a ‘can’t-do’. Don’t let the cute looks deceive you, underneath all that hair is a feisty little character. Pomeranians make great family pets.
