Introduction

An American hybrid, the Pomchi is a cross between the Chihuahua and the Pomeranian developed by breeders who wanted to celebrate the best of both types. This has produced an affectionate, gentle and bright dog that has a large and loyal following in the States and is pretty popular in the UK too.

As a relatively new designer breed, the Pomchi is not Kennel Club registered. Puppies will follow the physical characteristics and attributes of one parent more than the other so litters do vary.

History

The Pomchi is too new to have its own history but that couldn’t be more different from the ancestry of its parents as both the Pomeranian and the Chihuahua have long and noble roots.

With any hybrid breed, it is crucial to understand the characteristics of the parents. The Chihuahua hails from a state in Mexico after which it takes its name but many experts believe they may have originated either from China or are the descendants of an ancient South American breed. The Chihuahua is the smaller of the two parents.

The Pomeranian is also named after its place of origin, Pomerania, which is in north-west Poland and also includes northeast Germany. They are an old herding breed and as their popularity increased in the 18th and 19th centuries, they were bred to be smaller for fashion.

Both dogs have established breed standards and traits and, as with any crossbreed, it is important to choose a puppy that has come from parents who are excellent examples of their own breeds.

Personality

The Pomchi is an affectionate and fun-loving cross breed but they are quite strong personalities so need experienced owners with plenty of input in their formative months and regular training. The Pomchi makes a great family pet and doesn’t need either a huge space or lots of exercise compared to other breeds but they can be noisy so may not always be suited to an environment with lots of neighbours unless they are trained to stop after one bark.
