Introduction

The Pointer is named specifically after the job this dog was bred to do namely ‘point’ at birds and game on the hunting field. A very popular family dog, the Pointer takes all their traits of obedience and agility into the home to make an exceptional companion. They are energetic and fun-loving with generous temperaments.

History

It is thought that Pointers originated from Spain but this is by no means certain. Pointers were certainly recorded in the UK as early as 1650 and it is possible that they were brought from the Netherlands which was then under Spanish control.

The early Pointers were a slower and heavier dog than the modern version of the breed and probably lightened by using Foxhound and Greyhound blood in England. Later on, the English setter was used to stabilise the Pointer’s temperament which was recorded as ferocious. The result was a supreme hunting dog beloved of English aristocrats which is why this breed are so frequently immortalised in the art of the day, possibly the dog that appears the most in 18th and 19th-century English paintings.

The Pointer went with the early settlers to America and was recognised as a breed by the American Kennel Club in 1879 with the American Pointer Club following on in 1938. Despite this proud heritage and the dog’s good looks, the Pointer is not that common a breed either in the States or the UK.

Personality

The Pointer is able to take all the traits of their sporting heritage and convert them into a happy balanced family dog. However, they are a really high-energy breed and need the right environment in which to thrive. They are good with children and adore the hustle and bustle of a busy home.
