This dog redolent of Imperial China has a noble history and was a regular at the imperial court. They are a breed brimming with character and a devoted following across the world.

The Pekingese seems only too well aware of his imperial status and prefers to be the superior in the man-dog relationship but will tolerate an equal status just about. This breed offers real devotion once you have won their trust. These independent characters always maintain a dignity and superiority but this is what many people love about the breed.

The real history of this ancient breed has been lost over time although Chinese legend has plenty to say about it. The breed is thought to be one of the oldest in the world at about 2,000 years old and originated during the Tang Dynasty. Named after the capital city, Peking, now Beijing, they commanded an early royal status which is why they thrived under this protection and in fact, this rule remained in existence until 1860; ordinary people were not allowed to own a Pekingese.

The British brought them to England at roundabout this time as a result of their presence in China during the Opium War and the breed became a firm favourite of Queen Victoria gaining Kennel Club recognition in 1910. They remained relatively rare outside China for decades but gradually their presence spread during the 19th century. Because of their looks, the Pekingese can be a rather ‘marmite’ breed but they enjoy huge support around the world.

A jaunty intelligent breed, the Pekingese does have a mind of its own so can be wilful and rather imperious when it comes to ignoring instructions. Good early training can manage this and create a very loving and affectionate family pet.

They are a breed that is not always very tolerant of small children or other furry pets so sole dog status or a shared home with another Pekingese are the best options with older children rather than infants.
