Introduction

Not a widely known breed, the Norwich Terrier – not to be confused with the Norfolk Terrier – is one of the smallest of the UK terrier breeds. The main difference between the two breeds (and yes, it is tricky) is that the Norwich terriers have ears in a pricked position whilst their near relative, the Norfolk Terrier have dropped ears.

The Norwich Terrier has a small but loyal following for this pint-sized characterful dog. Recognised by the Kennel Club in 1932, their numbers are now worryingly low and they are on the KC Vulnerable Breeds List. Expect to have to wait for a puppy and pay a premium price if you want one to share your life with.

History

The exact origins of the breed are unknown but their size and colouring would suggest breed influences from the Irish Red Terrier, the Yorkshire Terrier and the Border.

Bred deliberately to be small enough for vermin control, this breed has been in existence for about a century. Developed by a character called Frank Jones, his intention was to produce a very small working terrier capable of going to ground. The two breeds were as one until after the Second World War when the Norwich Terrier became a separate entity from the Norfolk Terrier.

Once very popular in the country set, their numbers have declined hugely and this little character dog is now officially classified as an ‘at risk’ breed.

Personality

Norwich Terriers are real live wires, don’t let their diminutive size deceive you. With all the usual terrier characteristics of selective hearing and tenacity, these are fabulous character dogs.

Norwich Terriers need lots to occupy them and prefer an active lifestyle – a handbag dog they most certainly are not! They have a friendly disposition and are very adaptable to different situations providing they are properly socialised as puppies.
