Introduction

The Norfolk Terrier is named after its county of origin in East Anglia and is not to be confused with the Norwich Terrier also from Norfolk but they are two distinct breeds although this was not always the case. The smallest of all the British terrier breeds, the Norfolk Terrier was bred to hunt vermin and shows all the typical terrier tenacity and character. But they have a sweet nature with people and children although they may be less reliable with other small furry members of the family.

History

Norfolk was quite a remote and closed place even after the Second World War which is when the wider world started to see Norfolk Terriers but the reality is that they were probably around for decades before that just hidden away.

Rather famously they were put to work by a group of students at the University of Cambridge to keep vermin down in the colleges. They were briefly named Trumpington Terriers after the road in which the students lodged. The early origins of the breed are not known but it is thought the Norfolk was created by crossing a small tan Irish terrier with the Yorkshire Terrier.

Personality

The Norfolk Terrier is a feisty breed that takes no prisoners. They are bright and engaging and like nothing better than a busy family home. Like all terriers, they can be resolute if not a little stubborn and wilful but they repay the time spent on early training in spades – they really are a lovable and characterful companion. Still a relatively scarce breed, expect to pay top dollar for a puppy and expect to join a waiting list.
