Introduction

With oodles of personality and character, the smart Manchester Terrier has a background in rat-catching and hare coursing like many of the other terrier breeds. Known as the Gentleman’s Terrier, they have always been viewed as more Gamekeeper than Poacher and these days their quick minds and talents are put to good use in the agility arena. They are also amazing footballers!

The Manchester Terrier is a high-energy breed, something of a canine dynamo. Not at all fashionable in dog circles, their numbers have been in decline for a long time so expect to join a waiting list if you want a puppy.

History

Like many of the small terrier breeds, the exact origins of the Manchester Terrier are not clear. There is a reference to a black and tan terrier-like dog from the 15th century and certainly, the breed seemed established by the Tudor age when it was very popular as a ratter.

Around 1800, a rather famous Manchester Terrier called Jack Black was well-known throughout the streets of London with the moniker, the Royal Rat Catcher due to his prowess at hunting down vermin. Around that time, a breeder in the North of England decided to modify the breed into something a little more agile producing the Manchester Terrier that is still in existence today.

Personality

A typical cheeky character, the Manchester Terrier is full of boundless enthusiasm and energy. Like many terrier breeds, they need plenty of stimulation to keep them occupied as well as lots of exercise and walks so they are perfect for a busy family with lots going on or a country home with other animals and rural activities.

The Manchester Terrier is a very loyal breed but expect to put in some work training and establishing good manners and socialisation. Best integrated into a busy lifestyle, the Manchester Terrier is a more high-maintenance dog than other breeds but will reward your input with endless loyalty and a real enthusiasm for life.
