Introduction

Lowchens are a fantastic little companion. These doting dogs have a variety of different personality traits which are all highly rewarding for their owners. Not only are they doting and remarkably loving, but these pups are also known for their intelligence, as well as their playful, energetic natures. All-in-all, Lowchens are a charming and characterful friend for life.

A house with a Lowchen in it is never dull. These fun-filled little pups are always up for a game. In fact, despite their size, their games are surprisingly high-energy.

Did you know? The name Lowchen actually means ‘lion dog’. This may make you jump to certain personality traits, but the only way in which a Lowchen is lion-like is in its gorgeous long mane. These pups are chill, playful and highly companionable - not traits which many lions can boast of!

History

The history of the Lowchen breed is actually a bit of a hotly debated subject.

It’s believed that the breed could come from somewhere in North Europe. Some theories state that these dogs could have originated from either Germany, France or Belgium.

Many also believe that Lowchens could be one of the dog breeds which led to the creation of the much-loved Toy Poodle breed.

Other popular theories are based upon the belief that Lowchens may originally come from either the Mediterranean, Russia, or Tibet.

Personality

Lowchens are (mostly) pretty chill pups. They have a naturally even and cheerful temperament, which makes them a wonderful companion to have by your side for life’s adventures.

They are also known for their gentleness which, although it is a charming trait for a dog to have the vast majority of the time, can translate to a shyness or nervousness around unfamiliar people or settings. As a result, be sure to carefully socialise your Lowchen when it is still a puppy.
