Introduction

Korthals Griffons are a loving, happy and lively breed of dog, which make a wonderful addition to a family home (so long as it’s a sporty one!).

These dogs love a good run about, and their energetic, fun-filled nature gives them a great adventurous side. But, when they’re not out and about, Korthals Griffons are big softies. They are highly affectionate, and love nothing better than playing with the family.

The intelligence of this breed makes them a wonderful companion to have by your side. Just be mindful of the fact that they like to keep their brains active as much as they do their legs!

Did you know? Korthals Griffons originate as a sporting dog, specifically a breed of hunting dogs. There’s no sign of them losing these abilities any time soon - you’d be astounded by their ability to point and retrieve.

History

Korthals Griffons are actually a relatively new dog breed. In fact, the origins of the breed can actually be traced back very specifically. So specifically, that the Dutchman E.K. Korthals is given the title of establishing the breed.

He started his work back in 1874, as his goal was to cross-breed established species (it is believed that he sought to combine key traits of the Otterhound breed with a combination of Spaniel breeds and Setters), specifically to create a dog breed that would make the perfect gundog companion.

Just 13 years later, the Korthals Griffons were first, officially registered as a dog breed in America.

Personality

With an ancestry like this, it’s hardly surprising that good, regular exercise is an absolutely vital part of caring for a Korthals Griffon. These dogs have an absolutely boundless supply of energy, and successfully burning it all off is no mean feat. But, if you and your family are keen outdoor enthusiasts, this breed will make a fantastic addition to your adventures.

They have a lovely, happy temperament and so they enjoy socialising and getting to know new faces. Socialisation is still super important though, especially if you have young children or other pets in the house.

Another stand-out feature about this charming breed is their sense of humour. All in all, few breeds can rival the Korthals Griffons for friendliness.
