Introduction
The Japanese Chin is a small dog originating from China. Seen as the most cat-like of the dog breeds, the Japanese Chin is a companion dog that's happy to be on your lap. This toy-sized dog is loving and caring for their owners.
History
The origins of the Japanese Chin are the subject of ongoing scholarly debate. It is generally agreed that the breed began in China (despite the breed name) and was then taken abroad. One story claims they were given to Japanese royalty as gifts from the Rulers of Korea around 732 AD. Others believe the Empress of Japan received the breed as a gift in the middle of the sixteenth or seventeenth century. Wherever they began, they eventually landed in Britain in 1613, got taken to America in the early 1800s, and from 1868 they were lapdogs for the nobility around the world. Now they are companion dogs living in homes across the world.
Personality
Known for being in tune with their owner's emotions, the Japanese Chin is alert, intelligent, and independent. Japanese can often be found cleaning themselves by licking their front paws and rubbing themselves. They have a fantastic sense of balance and can sometimes hide in unexpected places. Because of their bond and their sensitivity with their owners, they can be prone to separation anxiety. They get on well with older children, however, due to their size, they can occasionally be injured by younger children and so it's best the two don't mix. When training, they can be prone to boredom and so require different training routines to prevent this, however, their intelligence means that they can learn quickly and move fast onto more advanced tricks.
