Introduction

The Irish Terrier is a fun-loving, endearing, longer-legged terrier with a mischievous lust for life. With boundless energy and a loving nature, they’ll play all day with children and then curl up with their family to watch TV at night, making them ideal family pets, but they also make loyal companions for any individual with the energy to keep them well exercised.

History

Native to Ireland, the Irish Terrier’s origins are thought to date back to at least the Middle Ages. Used to control vermin and keep a watchful eye on livestock, Irish Terriers appear to have been part of life on Irish farms for centuries, but the exact origins of the breed my never be known. During World War I, these courageous and determined little characters were used to carry vital messages to soldiers in the trenches, a task they carried out loyally and bravely.

Personality

There are some who see courageous traits as “reckless and foolhardy”, but something everyone agrees on is the Irish Terrier’s gentleness and charm. They bond strongly with their people and make superb watchdogs, and while they can be “daredevils” at times, they don’t do well on their own and prefer company at all times. One of their less endearing terrier traits is digging. Given the opportunity, an Irish Terrier will dig up everything from flowerbeds to carpets, and they may even dig themselves down the back of the sofa.

Care Tips Irish terriers are relatively low maintenance. Grooming: a weekly groom will help to remove loose hairs, and hand-stripping is needed twice each year. Feeding: two meals per day of high-quality food. Exercise: this high-energy breed needs a minimum of 45 minutes of exercise split into two walks daily, ideally with free time off the lead to run, play, and let off steam. An under-exercised or bored Irish Terrier will find creative and destructive ways to entertain itself.
