Introduction
The only breed native to Iceland, the Icelandic Sheepdog is a small to medium-sized herding dog that will work all day and then fit right into the heart of family life as a loyal and affectionate companion.
History
The Icelandic Sheepdog arrived in Iceland with the Vikings and developed as a hardworking breed tough enough to withstand the harshest of elements. As a herding dog, the breed is highly-prized for its bravery and ability to locate sheep that have been buried under snow, but its sweet nature and playfulness have earned it a place as a much-loved family pet in many homes.
Personality
The Iceland Sheepdog is a high-spirited, intelligent, active, and hardworking dog, but also a sociable, friendly, affectionate, and extremely loyal companion and family pet. They are devoted to their people and do not do well if left alone for even short periods. Barking is an issue, and they seem compelled to chase anything that moves, so careful training is needed to keep them out of trouble.

Health Issues | Icelandic Sheepdogs are generally a healthy breed, but hip and elbow dysplasia can be hereditary conditions. |
Care Tips | Icelandic Sheepdogs are relatively low maintenance, but they need companionship and plenty of exercise. Grooming: a weekly brush is generally enough, but more frequent grooming will be needed when shedding (twice a year). Feeding: two meals per day of high-quality food. Exercise: one hour daily is the minimum, split into two walks, but more is definitely better for this breed. Free time to run and play in a secure garden is ideal, and interaction with ball games or agility challenges will keep an Icie happy. |
