Introduction

Originally bred as hunting dogs, Hungarian Vizslas have become popular family pets and companions renowned for their devotion and loyalty. In fact, they love to be involved in family life so much that they’ve earned themselves the nickname of “Velcro dogs” and will follow their people everywhere.

History

The exact origins of the Hungarian Vizsla remain up for debate with some experts believing the breed to have been around for centuries and others believing it developed in the 20th century. There are some images of “Yellow Turkish Hunting Dogs” in prints dating back to the times of the Magyar tribes over 1200 years ago, and Vizsla-type dogs were known to be much-prized by wealthy nobles in Hungary in the 1800s. By the 20th century, the versatility of the breed and its kind-temperament had led to it becoming a treasured national breed and a popular feature in just about every Hungarian household.

Personality

The Hungarian Vizsla is a lively, confident breed, but also extremely loving and affectionate. Originally bred to assist hunters by retrieving game, they are attentive and intelligent and very eager to please their people. They learn quickly and easily, making them a popular choice for first-time dog owners, and with plenty of exercise and interaction, they make friendly, playful, and obedient companions that are endless fun to be around.

Exercise: a daily minimum of one hour split into two walks, ideally two hours with plenty of interaction and game playing included. Free time to run, play, and let off steam in a secure garden will help keep this energetic breed calm and settled at home.
