Introduction

A popular breed in their native land of Hungary, the Hungarian Pumi is becoming known across the world as an intelligent, energetic, and friendly dog that’s fun to have around. They make loyal companions and family pets, and are superstars in a game of Frisbee.

History

The origins of the Hungarian Pumi can be traced back to Tibetan herding dogs used by Magyar tribes (Hungarians) to move livestock from place to place for grazing. Gentle enough to handle sheep and courageous enough to handle cattle, the intelligence and versatility of the breed has kept them in work as herding dogs to this day, but they also thrive in home environments where they’re kept active and given plenty of fun things to do.

Personality

The Hungarian Pumi is a fun-loving breed that needs to be busy. Boredom will quickly set in without plenty of exercise and mental stimulation, and this will lead to destructive behaviour and barking. As herding dogs, barking at livestock is encouraged, as is nipping at the heels of cattle to keep them moving, so these traits can be tricky to manage and discourage in pet dogs. With that said, active, outdoor-loving families and individuals will find the affectionate, loyal, and attentive Hungarian Pumi a joy to have around.
