Introduction

The Havanese is a lively, affectionate little dog that loves the company of its people. They get on well with other animals and will happily play with children, making them ideal family pets and companions, and with coats that don’t shed heavily, they’re a good choice for owners with allergies.

History

The Havanese is native to Cuba with its origins potentially in many other Mediterranean breeds including the Maltese, Bichon Frise, and now extinct Bichon Tenerife. They were originally developed as companions for wealthy owners and their beautifully unique coats helped keep them cool in Cuba’s hot climate. Their popularity led to them becoming Cuba’s national dog, and their charming looks and personalities attracted wealthy owners in other countries, including Queen Victoria.

Personality

The Havanese is a gentle-natured, playful, and very affectionate little character that gets along with people of all ages and other animals equally well. They are cheerful and highly intelligent and at one point were widely found performing in circuses. Natural show-offs that love to be the centre of attention, the Havanese needs companionship at all times to prevent boredom and unwanted behaviour.
