Introduction

The unique appearance of the hairless body and tufted mane around the face make the Hairless Chinese Crested an instantly recognisable breed. Their lively and mischievous characters have made them popular pets and companions, and their small size means they’re able to adapt to life in any size of home.

History

It’s believed that the Chinese Crested breed (Hairless and Puffball) dates back to the 13th century, but its origins may not be in China. The Chinese travelled extensively at this point in history and some experts believe the breed’s ancestors may be African Hairless Terriers brought back to China by boat. There’s also genetic evidence of a connection to the Mexican Hairless dog breed, suggesting that the Chinese Crested may have been renamed on its arrival in China.

Personality

The Hairless Chinese Crested is a friendly, playful breed by nature and a popular choice for first-time dog owners. They may be small in size, but they have big personalities and love showing off and entertaining their people and can become a little “big for their boots” if given the opportunity. They maintain a puppy-like exuberance throughout life making them fun playmates for children, but they can be a little snappy if they get over excited.
