Introduction

The Glen Of Imaal Terrier originates in Ireland and while it has been an extremely popular dog in the past, the dwindling numbers have meant that it’s been placed on The Kennel Club’s most vulnerable breeds list. There are just next-to-no puppies being bred or registered yearly, which is a shame since these dogs can be such amazing companionship dogs.

History

Throughout their Irish heritage, the Glen Of Imaal Terrier has been used as working dogs. They were originally used to hunt and control vermin populations in farms, and have been for centuries. There was even a book titled ‘The Noble Art of Venerie and Hunting’, written by George Turberville, that commented on their use.

Time passed and these dogs also found a place as sport dogs, usually for fighting other dogs and ‘spit’ dogs. Despite being around for so many centuries, it wasn’t until 1934 that the Irish Kennel Club recognised these dogs as an official breed, but now they are seen as vulnerable since other Terrier breeds are more popular.

Personality

Glen Of Imaal Terriers are extremely happy-go-lucky dogs, but due to their working backgrounds, are also very intelligent. There are few times you’re going to not see this dog smiling away and loving life, especially if they’re around you and you’re giving them lots of attention! This makes these dogs ideal to have around children.

However, due to the hunting instinct, these dogs aren’t best to have around other small animals like cats or birds, and do have a tendency to want to chase prey if they see them while you’re out and about, so bear this in mind!
