Introduction

It’s tough not to love the bear-dog that is the Caucasian Shepherd. Originating from somewhere between Europe and Asia, these mountain dogs are massive and are known for typically living on either end of the personality scale.

When trained right, these dogs are the most lovable, warm, beautiful, and brightest dogs you can ever meet, but if left untrained, threatened or not assertively owned, then they can run absolute riot and will be dangerous to be around because of their size. It’s all about investing the time in making sure you raise it properly.

History

While the true origins of the Caucasian Shepherd are relatively unknown, we do know that they come from the Caucasus Mountain area near the Caspian Sea, which is where they get their name. There are reports that, due to their massive size, they were used mainly as protection for flocks, animals, and humans.

It wasn’t even until 1990 when Stacy and Russell Kubyn imported the very first Caucasian Shepherd to Ohio, in which they then founded the Caucasian Ovcharka Club of America and the popularity has been increasing ever since. Sure, Caucasian Shepherd aren’t the most popular breed in the world, but there’s no doubt they won’t win a place in your heart.

Personality

It’s very important to remember the heritage and origins of the Caucasian Shepherd. When trained properly, they are one of the most beautiful and loving dogs you’ll ever spend time with, but they are very protective by nature. This means they can be aggressively wary of strangers and are completely fearless.

Nevertheless, with socialising training and a firm yet gentle owner, these dogs turn out to be nothing more than bundles of fun and love, making them great dogs to have around children and generally calm down as they get older.
