Introduction

If you were an escaped prisoner, you wouldn’t want this hound to be on your trail! Since Medieval times, the Bloodhound has hunted deer and tracked down people by using their incredible sense of smell. They can discern the direction a human went in days after they were there. Bloodhounds are also very affectionate family pets and have a surprisingly gentle nature around children.

History

The first historical record of this breed was in the early 14th century. At this time, the Bloodhound was a well established Medieval hunting dog. Whilst they didn’t commonly kill their prey, they would guide their master to it by using their sniffing abilities. Their wage was a chunk of meat at the end of the kill!

In the 19th century, the hound was exported to France. The St Hubert Hound, which was the hunting dog of choice in France, had recently become extinct. This is why the pooch is sometimes called the ‘Chien de Saint-Hubert.’ Today, the Bloodhound is used to track missing people, and to detect illegal substances in airports.

Personality

Often, the quality of training and socialisation a Bloodhound receives determines its personality. It’s important to train your pooch because it’s in its instincts to focus on whatever it can smell. You will need to keep it on a leash at all times in public places. When at home, the Bloodhound is more than happy to play with its owner or curl up at its feet. They are even-tempered and gentle, and when looked after properly they will reward you with unconditional loyalty and love.
