Introduction

Often described as bouncy due to its distinctive jumpy run, the Bearded Collie is extremely friendly and adorable. Whilst it originally served as a shepherd dog in Scotland, it is now considered a household pet too. Their trademark coat changes colour and greys over time, whereas when they are born, it is dark. If you’re a bit of a clean freak, then this might not be the perfect pooch for you. Commonly known as ‘shaggy dog syndrome,’ the Bearded Collie’s coat takes a lot of maintenance. It won’t refrain from leaving mud and water around your home. They fit the definition of a mucky pup perfectly!

History

The exact origin of this breed is a bit unclear, as farmers in Scotland didn’t keep any formal records. They were more concerned about making the perfect working companion for herding their sheep! It is, however, believed that native Scottish dogs were bred with Polish Lowland Sheepdogs. Beneath the Collies’ shaggy fur is a muscular frame. This makes them further adapted to their role as a herding dog. They are naturally obedient and able to organise animals to their farmer’s command. After World War Two the breed surged in popularity, and it is now not uncommon to come across this breed in your local park.

Personality

Bouncy and enthusiastic, this pooch will happily fit into any loving family household. As long as you can provide them with lots of attention and ample opportunities to exercise, they will return the love. They are good-natured and will do anything to protect their favourite humans, especially children. You must keep them mentally stimulated, though, or they will get bored and find something to do! A bored Collie could result in damaged furniture and a messy garden...
