Introduction

A cross between the Bavarian Hound and the Hanover Hound, the Bavarian Mountain Hound is a rare breed you won’t come across often. They have very strong instincts and mostly bred to aid hunters and rescue crews in mountainous regions. However, if you do get the chance to adopt one, you will be rewarded with a calm and compassionate friend for life.

History

In the 19th century, hunters needed an agile scenthound that could withstand rocky and mountainous terrains. Technology was now more advanced, with guns being used to aid hunts. Hunters needed a dog to track down the game that they had shot. The Bavarian Mountain Hound filled the gap perfectly. They direct their owner to the prey’s body by effortlessly tracking their blood.

1912 saw the establishment of the ‘Club for Bavarian Mountainhounds’ in Munich, and it wasn’t long until neighbouring countries sought the dog for their own use. More recently, the Bavarian Mountain Hound is welcomed as a household pet, though you might find it hard to get your paws on one as this breed is pretty rare!

Personality

It may come as a shock that this hound has a calm and reserved temperament. Don’t be put off by its hunter-heritage as you are guaranteed to soften to its sensitive nature. Barking does not come naturally to them unless they feel threatened. They love living in family households, especially if there are young children for them to entertain.

They are a sensitive breed and will become anxious if they can sense their owner is annoyed or stressed. Consistent mental and physical stimulation is necessary, and they shouldn’t be left alone for hours on end.
