Glamorous, sensitive and historic, Afghan Hounds are a unique breed both in appearance and personality. It is unsurprising that these pooches are often showcased in many Hollywood films, as they have an incredibly regal and dramatic demeanour. They really do turn heads! Fun Fact: In 1979, Barbie creators Mattel mass-produced the doll’s pet Afghan Hound ‘beauty.’ Her doggy companion was on the Christmas list of many young girls in the 80s!

Whilst the Afghan Hound didn’t reach British shores until 1925, the breed is believed to be one of the oldest to exist, dating back to ancient times.

In the modern-day, Afghan Hounds are no stranger to being photographed for the front page of Vogue. Yet they were originally bred selectively by nomadic populations as a skilled hunting dog. You wouldn’t want to be the prey of this breed! Their independent nature and a thick coat made the Afghan Hound the perfect suitor for the intense climate typical of mountains in central Asia.

Independence is the main personality trait of Afghans. Historically, it was their ability to think without guidance that made them such successful hunting dogs. This means that as the Afghan grows older, it demands less and less affection. Though the dog will continue to cherish and adore its owner, it doesn’t crave to be snuggled quite as much as most dogs. It also means it tends to be a quieter dog - it doesn’t get excited by strangers or bark too much either.
