Introduction

Originally bred as coursing dogs, Whippets were at one point known as “Snap Dogs” because of the speed at which they would snap up prey. Their elegant appearance and gentle temperament make them popular family pets, with their mix of playfulness and laziness making them fun companions to have around.

History

The exact origin of the Whippet remains up for debate, but Whippet-type dogs are known to have been highly-prized by nobles in medieval England and they may have descended from greyhounds crossed with other coursing breeds. It’s believed that the breed’s name came from a word in old English that meant “quick moving” and by the 1900s, Whippet racing was more popular among working classes in the UK than greyhound racing.

Personality

Greyhounds have a calm, sociable, loving temperament, and they bond strongly with their people. They rarely bark and are generally lazy when indoors, but they’re energetic and playful when outdoors. They can adapt to life in any size of home, but their instinct to chase anything that moves can pose an issue in homes with cats and other small pets.

Care Tips Whippets are relatively low maintenance. Grooming: an occasional groom with a soft brush. Feeding: two meals per day of high-quality food. Exercise: one hour of exercise each day split into two walks is the minimum requirement, but freedom to run and play at full speed in a safe environment is ideal. Rough terrain should be avoided, but letting off steam in a secure garden will keep a Whippet happy and settled for the rest of the day.
