Introduction

The Welsh Springer Spaniel is an affectionate and lively breed that is just as happy as a family pet or companion dog as it is a working dog. Renowned for their intelligence and playfulness, they also excel at agility and canine sports.

History

Originally known as the Welsh Spaniel, the Welsh Springer Spaniel is an ancient breed with ancestry dating back at least as far as the 1700s and possibly the 1500s. Bred to hunt game, they were popular with Welsh gentry, but they were versatile enough to herd sheep and cattle and soon became highly-prized working dogs across their native Wales and beyond.

Personality

Good-natured and kind, the Welsh Springer Spaniel is a popular companion for active and outdoorsy individuals, and as they are known to be loving and kind with children, they’re also a great choice for a family pet. As with other Spaniel breeds, they can be a little chaotic and boisterous, but they are very intelligent and eager to please and will settle into family life with the correct training. Loyal and people-oriented, Welsh Springer Spaniels don’t do well if left alone.
