Introduction

The Turkish Kangal Dog is the national dog of Turkey, where for centuries it has been a loyal and dependable herding dog for shepherds and an affectionate companion and guarding dog for families. Less well known outside of Turkey, the Turkish Kangal’s impressive stature is beginning to gather it some attention.

History

The exact origins of the Turkish Kangal Dog are unclear, but it’s an ancient breed that some experts believe may have links to the Mastiff-type dogs that can be seen in ancient artwork. The breed’s name may have originated from the Aga of Kangal family as they were important rulers in ancient times, but it’s known that throughout the centuries, villagers in remote areas have kept dogs with them at all times to protect livestock and family from wolf, jackal, and bear attack.

Personality

Highly-prized in their native land as herding and guarding dogs, Turkish Kangals are intelligent and kind dogs that form strong bonds with their people, often becoming devoted to one individual in particular. Wary of strangers and protective of their people, they make excellent guard dogs, but for this reason care must be taken to make proper introductions when visitors come to the house. They are not a good choice for first-time dog owners.

Care Tips the Turkish Kangal Dog is low maintenance, but exercise needs are relatively high. Grooming: a weekly brush is enough to keep loose hairs in check, but more frequent grooming may be needed twice each year when shedding. Feeding: two meals per day of high-quality food. Exercise: one hour of exercise each day is the minimum for this breed, with as much free time off the lead as possible. Room to roam in a secure garden is ideal, but fences need to be strong to make sure these big dogs can let off steam safely.
