Introduction

Spaniels have been bred for as far back as the 1600s where they were first bred in Spain, however the Sprocker Spaniel is a new crossbreed gaining popularity. While they are gundogs and have been bred specifically for that job they can make fantastic companion and family dogs. As an newer breed they have a lot of unexplored potential, but their excellent parentage makes many hopeful that as the breed settles they will show that they are not only fantastic work dogs, but excellent family dogs.

History

Spaniels were originally bred as gun dogs used to flush prey out of dense brush to make it easier for the hunter that owned them to shoot them. From there English Springer Spaniels started to be bred as a variation of the breed. In 1892 the Kennel club began to differentiate between American Cocker Spaniels and English Springer Spaniels as two separate breeds. These are the breeds that were later crossed together to make the Sprocker Spaniel. It’s not clear when Sprocker spaniel came onto the scene although it is estimated that it was around twenty years ago.

The Sprocker isn’t designated as a designer dog as they were bred to be a new and improved gundog, and not for a particular aesthetic look.

Personality

As the Sprocker Spaniel is produced from two similar breeds their temperament is more settled than other modern designer dogs and crossbreeds. They tend to be highly intelligent and able to learn a variety of commands quickly, and are especially adept at gundog training, dog sports training (such as agility), and flyball training. They are loyal, energetic and eager to please. These traits make them great family dogs. They can get along with children but need to be socialised well and need to be supervised to make sure children and Sprocker stay safe.
