Introduction

Bred to be a herding dog the Smooth Collie is an intelligent and affectionate dog. Both able in the agility field and remarkable family dogs the Smooth Collie is a popular choice of dog.

History

Originally thought to be bred in the highlands of Scotland the Smooth Collies origin is a little bit of a mystery. Even the origins of their name is a little bit muddy! Generally it’s thought to have either originated from an Anglo-Saxon word meaning “useful” or from the Galic words càilean and cóilean both meaning dog, doggie, or hound. The breed and it’s companion breed - the Rough Collie- became more popular when the breed caught the eye of one Queen Victoria. She brought the breed back to her own kennel and the breeds soon became popular. This is where the transition happened from working dog to pet and show dog. Of course the most famous Collie of all time is Lassie! Although the on screen Lassie was a rough coated Collie, Erik Knights film boosted the Collies popularity around the time of it’s release, and Lassie is still a well known fictional character.

Personality

Smooth Coat Collies are friendly family dogs. They are alert and vocal which means that, when trained well they can make excellent guard dogs. However, if they are allowed to bark indiscriminately, they can become problematic. Because of the breeds past they make excellent working dogs and can be very useful as assistance dogs for those with disabilities. They get on well with young children, older children and other animals but get on best with other dogs. Their intelligence means they can do very well in both agility competitions and the show ring.
