Introduction

A pointer breed that fits in well with families the Small Munsterlander is an affectionate pointer type dog. From its native land of Germany to across the world this is a dog that is growing in rapidly in popularity, and for good reason with an excellent history and temperament.

History

As the name suggests the Small Munsterlander originated in Germany as a hunting pointer dog used to track down and hunt waterfowl, birds, and fur bearing animals like hares and wild boar. The organised and methodical breeding of the Small Munsterlander breed started in the mid nineteenth century. There were originally two lines of the Small Munsterlander however there were no breed specific outlines. In nineteen-twelve the Club for Small Munsterlander Pointing Dogs was formed and by the end of the nineteenth century the German hunting organisations had developed regulations for these types of dogs in Germany. Since then the Small Munsterlander has remained popular in Germany and around the world.

Personality

As an intelligent breed the Small Munsterlander can be trained a large variety of tricks in a short amount of time. They are intelligent, affectionate, and self-confident and make great family pets. However, they are better for families with older children as younger children may not be able to keep up with the Small Munsterlanders energy and exuberance. Supervision when they are playing with children is always important. To keep your Small Munsterlander puppy happy and confident it’s important to socialise them to lots of different people and situations early on in their life.
