Introduction

As a relatively new breed the Slovakian Rough Haired Pointer was created to be a new, better, type of gundog. Energetic and boisterous these dogs are not typically kept as pets due to their high energy and work ethic. They do however make loyal and intelligent companions for those who do let them into their homes.

History

The Slovakian Rough Haired Pointer was developed in Slovakia in the 1950s. The breed is a mix of the German Wirehaired Pointer, Český Fousek and the Weimaraner dogs. Popular with gundog enthusiasts it was developed to be a new breed of gundog that can point, track, and retrieve in water or on land. They can primarily be found in their home country of Slovakia where breeding pairs must have had experience working before they can be used for breeding. The breed was imported into the UK by Gundog enthusiasts. Slovakian Rough Haired Pointers were recognised by the Federation Cynologique Internationale (the international canine body) in 1983 with other kennel clubs recognising it after.

Personality

Renowned for their loyalty and eagerness to please the Slovakian Rough Haired Pointer makes an excellent working dog, especially for gundog enthusiasts. They get on well with other dogs, other animals and children however they need to be supervised at all times. Early socialisation is imperative for them to be accepting of strangers and new situations.
