Introduction

No prizes for guessing which two breeds are responsible for the Pugalier, yes it is the Pug crossed with the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Not sure to which parent it owes the most, the Pugalier can favour one parent more than the other or inherit traits and characteristics from both.

The idea of this hybrid was to dilute or minimise the breathing problems of the Pug by adding in a longer nose which the Pug actually used to have a couple of hundred years ago but which was bred out with different bloodlines from China. Trading on the handbag status of the Pug, the Pugalier is Pug without the inherited defects.

History

Both foundation breeds have long well-documented histories but the Pugalier is a very new breed. The Pug dates back to the Han dynasty in China and became popular throughout Europe as trade spread from the Far East. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel owes his lineage to the Toy Spaniel and the breed was a favourite of both King Charles I and King Charles II hence the name.

Personality

The Pugalier will inherit his character from his parents so it pays to check out that they both have kind natures. Puppies will favour one parent more than the other but the key is what they inherit from their immediate family.

Most Pugaliers make kind and friendly family pets, they are personable and sociable and fit in well with all types of homes and lifestyles. Some can inherit the rather stubborn Pug streak but good early socialisation and training can reduce this if not eliminate it completely.
