Introduction

The name ‘Pomsky’ doesn’t take a huge amount of working out – this dog is a cross between the Husky and the Pomeranian. These beautiful dogs score highly in the cuteness overload stakes but this and their popularity are not the only reasons they attract premium prices. Because of the size difference between the breeds, the Pomsky is always created by artificial insemination rather than natural covering and as this is expensive, the cost of the process is reflected in the price of the puppies.

The Pomsky shares Spitz ancestry through both parents and is very popular in the States and Canada.

History

This new designer hybrid doesn’t have a long history as it is a relatively recent arrival and limited by the difficulty and cost of artificial insemination. The Pomsky Club of America is striving to get the breed recognised but this inevitably takes time and will be the result of generations of consistent breeding to produce predictable standards in terms of physical attributes and character traits. At the moment, puppies can vary quite significantly depending on their parentage which is usual with a crossbreed.

The most important aspect of buying any crossbreed is to trace back the pedigree of the parents both of which are long-established breeds and make sure that they are well conformed, free from health defects and with good temperaments.

Personality

The Pomsky doesn’t require a huge amount of exercise or space so they are the ideal dog for apartment living in town. Having said that, their character is quite comedic and so they also fit in very well to the hurly-burly of family life being both intelligent and eager to please.

They can be a vocal breed, however - Pomeranians are known for their yapping and Huskys have a chatty howl and whine – so you will need tolerant neighbours. And these are not the breed for allergy sufferers as they shed huge quantities of coat – hypoallergenic they are not.
