Named after a village in the Lake District, the Patterdale Terrier was bred to hunt foxes and rabbits and is closely related to the Fell Terrier. They are a cheerful outgoing dog with a friendly personality. Like most UK terriers, they are sharp-minded and enjoy lots of mental stimulation and physical exercise.

This breed is not regulated by the Kennel Club and doesn’t yet have a breed standard but the dogs are quite distinctive and easy to spot with dark brown or black coats. They have greater recognition in America where the American Canine Association endorses the breed.

The Patterdale rather surprisingly is quite a new breed and so the exact origins of this engaging terrier are actually all documented.

The Patterdale was bred in the Lake District in the 1960s by a guy called Brian Nuttall. The so-called Nuttall bloodline is considered to be one of the most prestigious worldwide even now. It is thought he used Fell Terrier bloodlines from two particular breeders called Breay and Buck to create the modern Patterdale.

The Patterdale is bred to cope with the harsh, rugged and hilly terrain of the Lake District and also the inclement weather. This classic terrier is bred to catch prey but not kill it, just to mark where it is.

The Patterdale is a popular family pet due to its portable and easy size and loyal and engaging personality. It is a high energy breed and so plenty of exercise and company is essential. Like all terrier breeds, they can sometimes be wilful off the lead especially when a disappearing prey animal is under their noses so early socialisation and training at the puppy stage are essential.
