Introduction

These endearing little dogs look just like spaniels and so are sometimes called Continental Toy Spaniels. Charming, engaging and very affectionate, the Papillon is known to be one of the most intelligent of dogs and has a loyal following all over the world.

It is something of a competition between France and Belgium as to which country can claim to be the origin of this breed – a reluctant truce is the result as no-one knows for sure. The word ‘Papillon’ means butterfly and refers to the breed’s upright fringed ears which contribute to its charming appearance. There is also a drop-eared variety called the Phalene which means moth and refers to the moth’s folded wings when at rest.

History

The origins of the Papillon are obscure but it is certainly safe to say that they originated from Western Europe. Some people claim they are related to spaniels whereas others think they have connections with the Japanese Chin and ancient Asian lineage.

Their engaging appearance made Papillons a firm favourite with the European nobility and royal families. The Papillon came to the UK in 1901 and were an established and recognised breed in this country by 1923.

Personality

It’s easy to underestimate the Papillon and think of the breed as either a lapdog or a handbag pooch – think again. The Papillon is energetic and playful and excels at dog agility and obedience training. This is a big dog in a small body!

The Papillon is a family-friendly dog and loves nothing better than a busy household with lots to do. This breed is not excessive coat shedders so a good choice for homes with allergy sufferers.
