Introduction

The Norwegian Buhund belongs to the Spitz family and is described as a prototypical spitz. Bred originally as herding dogs, the Norwegian Buhund is intelligent and independent, affectionate and smart. This tractable dog is always keen to please, not a trait inherited from his Spitz ancestry.

Some owners describe this breed as tireless so they make great a great addition to the family in rural homes and a fun companion for dog agility. They are mostly unknown outside Norway but within the country have a loyal following and established breeding programmes.

History

The Norwegian Buhund originates from the coastal area of Norway and is closely related to the Icelandic Sheepdog. It is one of the oldest surviving breeds with a directly traceable lineage that goes back to 900 AD. The breed seems to be linked to the Vikings as remains of this breed have been found in Viking graves.

Bred originally to hunt bears and wolves, they also have herding abilities and will manage livestock like sheep as well as being employed as guard dogs.

Personality

Because the Norwegian Buhund was originally a working breed, they do require plenty of exercise and mental stimulation to remain fit and healthy and relaxed and kind. However, in the right environment, the Norwegian Buhund is a kind and fiercely loyal member of the family. Despite their working background, they are not overly vocal which is helpful if you have neighbours.

The Norwegian Buhund makes a great family pet and is reliable and dependable with children and also other animals. It is a mid-sized dog so avoids the management issues associated with some of the really large working breeds in terms of feed bills and outdoor space for exercise.
