Introduction

The New Zealand Huntaway has its origins as a working sheepdog and specifically one that was designed to work a large flock without a shepherd being present. This is a kind and reliable breed, totally trustworthy but best off doing a job and being occupied both mentally and physically.

The New Zealand Huntaway is a dog that likes lots of exercise so is best suited to a rural home where there is both space and interest. They do make the adjustment to pet status and family life very well providing they have enough company and stimulation.

History

The country of origin of this breed is not in dispute and the derivation of the word ‘Huntaway’ is taken from the NZ herding trials for working sheepdogs so no mystery there. Collies were originally used for herding sheep in New Zealand but they didn’t have the stamina needed for such large flocks plus their long coats better suited to the Northern Hemisphere climate made it hard for them to work in the intense New Zealand heat.

The NZ stockmen developed a shorter coated dog that could herd sheep alone and also one that could offer the level of stamina required out in the field. The exact dogs used to create the New Zealand Huntaway is a matter of speculation but it is thought that several breeds like the Labrador, Rottweiler and the German Shepherd are in the mix.

Personality

New Zealand Huntaways are kind dogs with even temperaments essential for the working conditions they have to manage. They are a ‘get on with it’ breed, loyal, durable and reliable and so make a great family pet. This is an intelligent breed, capable of working alone without a handler so it is essential that they are kept in an environment where there is enough mental stimulation – a busy country home is perfect.
