Introduction

The clue is in the name as the Miniature Bull Terrier is the petite cousin to the bigger breed, the Bull Terrier. Their small stature makes them easy to manage and they are an incredibly loyal and loving canine companion who just adore being involved in all aspects of family life.

Even for such a small dog, they do need a lot of exercise and they have a low boredom threshold so a busy household where there is always someone at home is ideal for this breed.

History

Miniature Bull Terriers derived from standard Bull Terrier parents who just produced exceptionally small puppies. They must have been popular as eventually, the Miniature Bull Terrier devolved into its own standalone breed.

The Bull Terrier, the Miniature’s bigger cousin, started out at the beginning of the 19th century developed as a breed that could control vermin and take part in sport. They are a cross between Old English Bulldogs and Old English Terriers the idea being to combine tenacity with speed. Breed standard wise, there was little intervention or regulation which is why the Miniature Bull Terrier was able to come into being rather perversely and is now one of the three established bull terrier breeds alongside the Staffordshire Bull Terrier and the Bull Terrier. Recognition by the Kennel Club in 1991 is surprisingly recent.

Personality

Despite their fighting antecedents, the Miniature Bull Terrier is a friendly and gentle family pet. They do have that terrier brightness and sharpness so require plenty of stimulation to keep them amused. They are playful and comical but can be quite independent sometimes even stubborn o do need strong leadership from their owner.
