Introduction

Unmistakably unique, the Mexican Hairless is a very striking dog with a beautiful and intelligent face and an existence closely allied to the ancient Aztec deities. The official name of the Mexican Hairless in Aztec means ‘God Dog’.

The Mexican Hairless is a fearless and energetic breed, sharp and intelligent; they are also hugely loyal and devoted to their owners. This is a breed that thrives on exercise. The breed has three different sizes, the Miniature, the Standard and the Intermediate.

History

The Mexican Hairless has a long and proud history intertwined with the Aztec civilisation dating back over 3,000 years. Supposedly imbued with healing powers, these dogs were revered as spiritual beings and also, rather oddly, as a delicacy, so did sometimes end up on the dinner table.

In 1954, a man called Norman Pelham-Wright led an expedition to save the breed which was perilously low in numbers, introducing the breed to the UK two years later. He is recognised as the man who saved the Mexican Hairless from extinction but they still remain today quite a rare and sought after dog.

Personality

The Mexican Hairless is a real livewire of a dog brimming with intelligence and energy. Easy to train as they pick things up so quickly, they are cooperative and tractable but do need plenty of exercise.

The Mexican Hairless is a late-maturing breed so there is plenty of time to influence their formative years and create a well-behaved and well-socialised canine companion. They are probably not a good choice of breed for first-time owners as they are pretty hands-on but for an experienced dog person with the right environment, they are the perfect companion.
