Introduction

Lakeland Terriers are charming little dogs that are filled with character. These friendly pups are known for their bold and strong-willed personality. Lakeland Terriers are filled with confidence, and this steadfast side of their character translates into complete devotion to their owner.

If you show your pup that you’re sure of yourself too, then you’ll have a Lakeland Terrier that is devoted to you, happy to learn from you and adores you wholeheartedly.

Although they’re little, they have boundless energy and are brimming with excitement. If they know that you’re the top dog of your family, then they’ll be a fun-filled addition to your home.

Did you know? Lakeland Terriers are highly devoted to their owners. But, they need careful training in order to bring out the best side of their personalities.

History

Lakeland Terriers get their namesake from the area of England where they originate from. They come from the Lake District. This stunning English Natural Park is set in Cumberland, and is situated in the North of England (not too far from Scotland). They’re actually one of England’s oldest breeds of working terrier, which are actually still doing their job now.

In these early days, the job of the Lakeland Terriers that lived there were to help farmers to hunt wild foxes, in order to protect the sheep from these fierce predators. As you can imagine, Lakeland Terriers are a brave bunch.

Lakeland Terriers also helped out in other areas of farm life, including hunting rabbits or rats, and even digging for badgers.

Personality

Lakeland Terriers are sweet and affectionate but, as the ‘terrier’ part of their name hints at, they certainly have a bit of a wilder side. Feisty pups are brilliantly charming and are always full of their own character - we wouldn’t change them for the world.

Having said that, it’s important that any new owner of a Lakeland Terriers is aware of this side to them. There’s no mistaking the fact that Lakeland Terriers are a smart bunch. The key to managing this is by making it clear that you’re the boss - you need to establish yourself as the top dog of your home, which will then make them far more responsive to training and your commands. This will mean that you’ll be rewarded with their full respect.
