Introduction

When it comes to finding a sweet-natured household companion, few breeds can rival the Korean Jindo. First and foremost, these pups are renowned for their staunch, unwavering loyalty. Korean Jindos are, without a doubt, a friend for life.

This makes these dedicated companions a wonderful addition to a family home, as they will quickly develop a deep affection for the entire family.

Korean Jindos are remarkably active - so it may actually be handy if you have a family, as you can rope them in to help you out with the walks! They need a lot of regular exercise, but when you’re out and about with them, you’ll never fail to be delighted by their quick intelligence and impressive agility.

Did you know? In South Korea, there is a wonderful tale, which perfectly sums up the loyalty of Korean Jindos. In 1991, after being transported across a distance of over 180 miles, a Korean Jindo (named Baekgu) actually managed to make its way back to its previous owner. It travelled for 7 months to find its way back home.

History

The breed comes from Jindo, an island in South Korea. Throughout this island, the people are immensely proud of this dog breed, which gets its namesake from its home.

It is believed that Korean Jindos have existed on this island for centuries (and Korean records of this breed date back to at least for 1500 years). Throughout this long history, Korean Jindos were a loyal, talented (and so pretty invaluable) companion to hunters.

In fact, Korean Jindos were actually named as Korea’s 53rd National Treasure in 1962. The breed (and the issuing of purebred certification to individual pups) is carefully monitored by The Jindo Dogs Guild of Korea.

Personality

The sheer loyalty that Korean Jindos demonstrate is something rather special. As a result of this, when their owner has earnt their loyalty and affection, these dogs are brilliantly quick to train.

They also make for quiet, calm and respectful house pets. Even though they need to get a sizable chunk of exercise each day, the breed is surprisingly comfortable in a flat or smaller living space. So, as long as it gets its chance to dash about each day, you don’t need to worry about the amount of space your home offers - so long as you're by its side, it’ll be more than happy to lounge about with you.

But, due to their protective and defensive nature, it is key that you introduce them to strangers (as well as young children and other family pets) while they are still young.
